Medicine Ball

Another Great Training Tool That is Extremely Versatile and Inexpensive--Can Be Used Anywhere--At any Level--At any Age

A medicine ball, like a weight sled, sandbag, fitness bands, and a foam roller, may be all you need for a killer workout and a fully equipped home training gym.

Yes, we'd all like to have a nice squat rack, a great weight set, and a set of nice dumbbells, but, realistically, it's just not in everyone's budget.

So, in order to get the best training benefit (effect) from inexpensive, versatile, and durable training equipment, these weighted exercise balls need to be added to your training routine and equipment toolbox.

These weighted exercise balls can be made of a harder rubber surface so it can bounce , a softer, more pliable surface so it doesn't bounce, or they can be larger and made of a material that is semi-bouncy, depending on the force you apply when using them. These are called Dynamax Balls.

You can also find a weighted exercise ball with handles, similar to a kettlebell , or with a hole in the middle called a Rotational Medicine Ball, where a rope can be attached for chopping movements, rotational cycling, etc.

Medicine Balls:
  • can be used alone, for a training sequence designed for power endurance or conditioning, or as an accessory in your normal workout.

  • are portable enough to fit in your gym bag to take with you to train almost anywhere.

  • are almost limitless, and are great for athletes of all ages and any sport.

  • They can mimic power movements such as cleans, snatch, and other explosive throwing movements.

  • They can be used for balance and stability exercises as well, and can be progressed easily by increasing the weight, the volume (sets and reps) or moving on to more advanced exercises.

For power training, these weighted exercise balls are excellent. Unlike training with barbells and dumbbells, they can be released which allows for a maximum power output--you don't need to slow down the speed of the movement when you release them.

When training with barbells and dumbbells, you must decelerate (slow down) the bar at the end of the movement to keep from letting go. Maximum power is created without deceleration. Because you can release a medicine ball, you are able to train maximum power without deceleration. (You can also do this with sandbags).

At Finish First Sports Performance, we use medicine balls for all types of training, and will all of our athletes.
