Sports Performance Training is a specific exercise regimen comprised of the components specific to
improving the level of physical and mental performance of athletes in their sport(s).
Sports Performance Training Components:
Athletes must be specially trained in
- Mobility,
- Flexibility,
- Stability,
- Strength,
- Speed,
- Power,
- Endurance (muscular),
- Metabolic system efficiency (energy system development coupled with specific sport tissue
development),
- Nutrition,
- Recovery/Regeneration,
- Life balance, and
- Mental preparedness.
They also must learn to master skills specific to their sport (ie. shooting a basketball). Also fundamental to
sports performance training is the correct balance of training for exercise (physiology) and training for
movement.
A total athletic development program designs performance training programs with all of the necessary
components in mind.
Designing a Sports Performance Program:
A comprehensive sports performance enhancement program needs to address all of the components of
sports performance as well as any underlying muscular imbalances, joint mobility restrictions, or major
weaknesses that may exist (injury prevention). The simplest yet most effective approach to programming for
sports performance follows this protocol (note: this protocol is copywritten):
- Evaluation (Pro Evaluation)
- Planning (Needs Analysis, Goal Setting, Scheduling Training Cycles)
- Programming (Designing Program based on #1 and #2)
- Instruction and Observation (Executing #3 for each cycle, and moving on to #1 again)
A typical programming cycle would look like this:

Achieving Sports Excellence or Sports Mastery
Due to the higher levels of competition each year exhibited by athletes at all levels, more research is being conducted on what exactly it
takes to be an 'expert' or attain the highest level of achievement in sports. Research has been conducted for over 50 years in the former
Soviet Union with their Olympic athletes and much of this research is finding its way into the hands of higher level sports performance
coaches and sports coaches. Below, you will find an interpretation of what they call 'sports mastery', or the highest level of performance
attainable in any sport. We are reviewing several new publications that have been released on this subject and will have more
information pertaining to this subject soon.
The bottom line of all the research we have found is that:
Sports Success = Physical Training (Sports Performance Training)
